Episode #186 Heather's Suspira

Photobucket Photobucket

We continue with classic cult film month with two more defining movies. But, first we present our top six favorite breakthrough preformances.

First up, we have the dark comedy, Heathers. Veronica, (Winona Ryder) wants to be popular but can't stand the people in the popular clique. J.D, (Christian Slater) has a plan to propel Veronica into the spotlight, but she will need to get he hands dirty. A satrical look at high school politics, Heathers is a movie that couldn't possibly get made today.

Next we review another film set in a schoool, but totally lacking the comedy of the former movie; the 1977 Italian classic Suspiria. Suzy, having just arrived at a prestigeous ballet school slowly come to find out that everything is not exactly as it seems on the surface. Especially when students keep disappearing.

Episode #185 The Burning of Mad Max

Photobucket Photobucket

We continue classics month with two more genre defining movies. But, first, we have our top six spin-off list these are sidekicks or secondary characters that we would love to see get their own flick.

Our first movie revied this episode is the 1977 Australian dystopian action film, Mad Max. Desparetly trying to keep control in a deteriorating soceity, Max is a cop who is pushed too far. Soon, the bikers focus their atention on Ma's family and all hell breaks loose. Starring Mel Gibson, Joanne Samuel and Hugh Keays-Byrne.

Next we have one of the best entries into the slasher genre, 1981's The Burining. Years after the caretaker of a summer camp is burned almost to death, campers start dying. Do the deaths foretell the return of Cropsey? Maybe Jason Alexander knows.

Photobucket Photobucket

This week, we explore our favorite mad Doctors. From benevolent good guys to world conquering villains, who made our top six this week?

First up for review is the 1969 biker flick, Cycle Savages. Keeg (Bruce Dern) is furious that an artist (Chris Robinson) has been drawing pictures of him, he vows to find the artist and destroy his hands. Written and directed by Bill Brame, this biker flick features rapes, violence, drunken orgies and an unbelievable appearance by famed DJ Casey Kasem.

Next, we have the 1989 low budget horror / comedy Monster High. When two aliens steal a box containing a device that could cause the end of the world, they hide it on Earth. After unleashing Mr. Armageddon, all hell breaks loose and girls start dying. Can one average student save our entire planet? Here's hoping.

Episode #182 Satan's Corvette Summer

Photobucket Photobucket

This week, we present out top six list of favorite foreign directors.

Our first review is the infamous Mark Hammill vehicle, Corvette Summer. When his project car is stolen, Kenny does everything in his power to find it and return it to his school. Prostitues, chop shos, theives and pron makers all stand in his way, can he manage to find his precous Corvette in Las Vegas?

Next, we have the 1969 biker flick, Satan's Sadists. Starring Russ Tamblyn, it's a pretty mild entry in the genre. It hits all the beats you would expect from a biker movie, but doesn't present anything new.

Episode #181 Broadcast Ghost House Bombshells

Photobucket Photobucket

This week, we feature a top six list consisting of our favortie remakes.

Then, we move onto the locally (to us at least) shot Umberto Lenzi flick, Ghosthouse. A dead girl and her doll spell certain doom for anyone that encounters her.

We follow that up with what is basically a soft core porn flick, thinly disguised as a comedy: Broadcast Bombshells. The less said about this one, the better.

Episode #180 Truth or Society

Photobucket Photobucket

This week, our top six list is all about our favorite, most batshit insane characters. We broadcast this episode as a live show, so expect a little interaction with the chatroom.

Our first flick up for review is the lost 80's made for video: "Truth or Dare?: A Critical Madness." Mike Strauber catches his wife Sharon in bed with his best friend Jerry. He gets mad and takes off to embark on an adventure of murder and self-mutilation in demented games of truth or dare.Aside from the fat that you never truly know what is real and what is in his head, that's pretty much the entire plot.

Next we have Brian Yuzna's directorial debut: "Society." Teenager Bill Whitney (Billy Warlock) feels like a misfit even compared with his parents and his sister Jenny (Patrice Jennings). Jenny's "boyfriend" David Blanchard (Tim Bartell) won't stop raving about... well, something, and eventually he plays some pretty disturbing tapes to Bill giving him a glimpse into a hidden society existing just beyond the world we know and trust. When Blanchard dies in a car accident, Bill decides to investigate his family and find a scary truth. Delving into Lovecraftian territory, this is everything you've come to expect from Brian Yuzna.

Episode #179 Sex with a Lizard in a Women's Skin

Photobucket Photobucket

For the top six list this week, we put a flip on last week's list and go through the "Worst Stephen King Adaptations."

This week we have 2 Italian flicks from classic directors Sergio Martino and Lucio Fulci. First, we tackle the sex comedy "Sex with a Smile." Five short comic sketches, all unrelated to each other, except that they are all expressions of Italian sexual humor. In one sketch, Marty Feldman plays a bodyguard, hired by her father to watch a young woman; he watches her a little too closely. In another, while Barbara Bouchet's husband is out of town on business, a stranger offers her twenty million lire in return for sex. Three times he offers, three times she protests and then consents, only to find out in the end that both the man and his sixty million lire are -- oh, but that would spoil the ending.

Next, we take a look at the giallo "Lizard in a Women's Skin." Florinda Bolkan plays the daughter of a prominant English politician who keeps having recurring "nightmares" in which she makes love to a bisexual nympho who lives downstairs and conducts all-night LSD orgies. When the nocturnal wet dreams become murderous, a neighbor turns up dead, and Florinda is the main suspect. Did she actually commit the murder she dreamt about? Is she being framed by her philandering husband? Did Florinda actually make nightly visits downstairs aside from borrowing the occasional cup of sugar? How DID Florinda's letter opener end up stuck in the dead neighbor's chest anyway? The complex plot unfolds amidst red herrings, outlandish dream sequences, lesbian hanky panky, and ominous close-ups of Florinda Bolkan's guilt-ridden facial expressions every time someone mentions the murder. All this takes place in swinging late-1960's London.

Episode #178 The living Dead Girl's Full Contact

Photobucket Photobucket

This week, we return to our normal routine (HOCKEY!) and start with a list that surprisingly, we have never done; Top Six Favorite Stephen King Movies.

But, before all that, we would like to thank everyone that helped us get to a fantastic milestone.

Outside the Cinema has been downloaded over ONE MILLION TIMES!

Photobucket

From there, we get into the reviews. Firswwt up is the French "horror" movie, "Living Dead Girl." When her grave is disturbed by both an earthquake and a toxic waste spill, a deceased girl comes alive to walk the earth again in French filmmaker Jean Rollin's macabre tale of zombie carnage. After rising from her tomb, Catherine (Francoise Blanchard) hungers for flesh and blood and sets out to find childhood friend and blood sister Helene (Marina Pierro). Helene decides to help satisfy Catherine's bloodlust by luring people into their lair.

Next, we have the Hong Kong action flick, Full Contact. Hong Kong action superstar Chow Yun-Fat teams up with director Ringo Lam for this old-fashioned good-versus-evil story about Jeff (Yun-Fat), a bouncer who decides to help his friend Sam (Anthony Wong) repay his debts to gangsters by joining the thugs on a heist. When Jeff is double-crossed during the robbery-turned-awry, he withdraws to a Buddhist monastery until it's time to seek vengeance.

Episode #177: Youngblood's Miracle

Photobucket Photobucket

In a somewhat strange episode of Outside the Cinema this week Bill goes off the deep end because the Bruins won the Stanley Cup. Our top six list for the week was supposed to be all about out top 6 favorite fathers, but Bill for some reason (see above) didn't manage to do his list.

Our first flick up for review is 1986's, "Youngblood." A young man (Rob Lowe) leaves the farm to make it big in professional hockey but discovers he'll need more than ambition. He tries out for a minor-league team full of major egos (Patrick Swayze and Keanu Reeves) and goes head-to-head with a new nemesis (George J. Finn). He eventually finds romance with his landlady (Fionnula Flanagan) and the coach's daughter (Cynthia Gibb), but it's his father (Eric Nesterenko) who helps him find his heart.

Next, we have the story of what is quite possibly the greatest hockey story of all time, "Miracle" starring the one and only Kurt Russel. Focused on achieving the impossible -- defeating the Soviet Union's unbeaten hockey team at the 1980 Winter Olympics -- brash U.S. hockey coach Herb Brooks (Kurt Russell) unites a motley group of college athletes and turns them into a force to be reckoned with. Patricia Clarkson, Noah Emmerich and Eddie Cahill co-star in this inspirational drama based on an improbable true story that shocked the world.

Episode #176 Midnight Torso Madness

Photobucket Photobucket

Welcome back ladies and scallops, this week OTC Bill and Chris revisit an OTCBC list "Top Six Films You Only Need to Watch Once."

This week we tackle a classic giallo heralded by most to be one of the best: Sergio Martino's "Torso". When beautiful coeds turn up dead in a series of sexually charged killings, beautiful American exchange student Jane (Suzy Kendall) and her three lusty girlfriends retreat to the safety of a remote Italian villa. But as the girls abandon their clothes and their inhibitions, the twisted killer closes in for another round of murder. This Italian giallo erotic thriller also stars Tina Aumont and Luc Merenda.

Next, we also take a nice little dip back into the David Naughton catalog with the Disney made "Midnight Madness." Michael J. Fox makes his film debut in this raucous and sometimes raunchy teen comedy about college students of all stripes -- jocks, geeks and preppies -- who join in on what may be one of the craziest games of all: The Great All-Nighter. This scavenger hunt has them running around campus looking for clues that'll point them toward the finish line. The teams are all competing against each other, but their biggest enemies may just be themselves.

Episode #175 In a Glass Naked Blood Cage

Photobucket Photobucket

This week, we have a top six list that is sure to get people talking. Both agreeing and arguing! We discuss the top six things that we think is wrong with modern horror! Yeah. Good luck listening to this and not wanting to yell out loud in inappropriate places.

Our first film up for review is the Agustí Villaronga directed, "In a Glass Cage," a.k.a. "Tras el cristal." This chilling drama tells the story of Klaus (Gunter Meisner), an ex-Nazi pedophile who becomes drawn into a sick new game in the second chapter of his life. Klaus's guilt over his actions leads him to a suicide attempt. He survives but remains paralyzed from the neck down. When his wife hires Angelo (David Sust) to take care of him, it soon becomes clear the handsome young nurse has his own agenda. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0090197/releaseinfo#akas

Next we move from the psychologically disturbing to the viscerally disturbing. Naked Blood: Megyaku is the story of a scientist who taints his mother's experiment with his own drug that transforms pain into a pleasurable experience. Unfortunately for the three women involved in the experiment, the drug works a little bit too well. Plus, there's a cactus connected to a machine that is supposed to help one of the girls experience a dream like state because she never sleeps. Follow that up with self mutilation, trippy abstract plot resolutions and slfe canibalism and you have... well, something. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0217679/

Episode #174 The The Red Queen Kills Macabre Seven Times

Photobucket Photobucket

In this weeks episode Bill and Chris swap years and reveal their top sic favorite films from the year the other was born. For those of you not playing along at home, that would be 1972 and 1977.

The first review is the Giallo The Red Queen Kills Seven Times, a.k.a. La dama rossa uccide sette volte a.k.a. Blood Feast. Two sisters, Kitty (Barbara Bouchet) and Evelyn, are cursed by a family painting depicting a seven year-cycle in which a Red Queen is raised from the dead to kill seven times. After Evelyn seemingly perishes and multiple killings ensue, their niece Franziska (Marina Malfatti) and Kitty start to suspect that Evelyn may be the Red Queen.

Our next movie up for review is the Lamberto Bava feature Macabre, his first directorial effort. A middle-aged woman, traumatized from the death of her adulterous lover, moves into a room at a New Orleans boarding house where the blind landlord becomes suspicious to her activities of continuing her affair with her dead lover.

Then, we jump into a mountain of feedback.

Episode #173 Hot Django: The Movie

Photobucket Photobucket

Make sure you check out the special extra feedback episode!

Welcome Bill and Chris, back to recording in the studio after the 6 week baby hiatus!

The guys tackle a top 6 list of films that could be considered "spiritual sequels." This week's list strems from joking about how Demolition Man can dovetail into Judge Dredd with very little story to explain the connection.

This weeks featured reviews are The 80's ski classic Hot Dog: The Movie. Harkin Banks is a naive, skiing-obsessed, young man from Idaho who travels to Sqaw Mountain, California to compete in the FIA International Skiing Competition. Along the way Harkin picks up a wild and outgoing teenage runnaway, Sunny, who decides to tag along with him. Then Harkin meets skiing professional Dan O'Callahan and his group of misfit skiers who will compete against the arrogant, three-time FIA champion Rudi Garmisch. While Harkin squares off with Rudi by day, he and Dan go partying by night with their friends which includes hot-tob and steam-room making out with various women, including Rudi's former bombshell flame Sylvia.

Next, we have the classic spagetti western, Django. A lone man in a Union uniform walks throught the desolate landscape, dragging a coffin. That man is Django. He rescues a woman bandits and contunies his journey with her to a town ravaged by the same bandits. The scene for confrontation is set. But why does he drag that coffin everywhere and who, or what, is in it?

Episode #172: Poker in Blood Rage (In Bed)

Photobucket Photobucket

This week, the last of the pre-recorded-no feedback shows starts off with our Top Six favorite prison films.

First up, BIll and Chris review the Fenech film, Poker in Bed. Poker in Bed (great title) is a delightful Italian sex comedy starring Carlo Giuffre as a handsome shoe salesman who turns gigolo when his gambling gets him into trouble. Soon he's juggling three women (and endangering his health from overexertion) when Edwige Fenech waltzes into his life, debasing herself to our amusement as a German health nut and Richard Wagner enthusiast who can only become aroused when wet. (Thanks to R. C. on IMDb for the synopsis.)

Next, we have another returning co-host... Stefan! He joins Bill to review Blood Rage. This film from 1987 stars Louise Lasser, Mark Soper and Marianne Kanter. The plot focuses on the mystery surrounding a rash of killings apparently committed in a "blood rage."

Episode #171 Legacy of Samoa Queen of Hell

Photobucket Photobucket

In this weeks episode our Top 6 List this week is films we feel are under hyped.

Ian from Cinearama and 35 MM Heroes returns to review "Legacy of Satan." A young woman is chosen as a Satanic cult's new queen. Starring John Francis, Lisa Christian (seriously,) and Paul Barry.

The next review features the dulcet tones of the Lord of Palavr; Stefan returns to Outside the Cinema to review the early Ediwige Fenech film "Samoa Queen of the Jungle." This is Ms. Fenech's third film role and she stars as the titular Samoa in this Italian jungle adventure. Also known as: "Samoa, regina della giungla."

Episode #170  Stray Cat Scarecrow Hunter

Photobucket Photobucket

This week, we talk about our favorite (or least favorite) roles that actors have taken that were most likely a mistake and could be considered potentially career killers.

The first movie reviewed this week is Scarecrows with returning guest host Reverand Scott. After pulling off a major heist, a group of ex-military outlaws commandeer a plane for their getaway. But when one of the group betrays them by parachuting out with the cash, the rest follow -- and find themselves in the middle of a nightmare. They take shelter in an abandoned farmhouse set in a cornfield, where sinister scarecrows soon come to life and start taking them out one by one in this spine-chilling cult classic.

Next, we have a review of Stray Cat Rock: Sex Hunter with extra special gueat reviewer, F13. This sequel to director Yasuharu Hasebe's Naraneko Rokku: Onna Bancho stars Meiko Kaji as the tough leader of an all-female misfit gang of school-age girls called the Alleycats, who spend their time getting into fights, listening to music and mugging innocent strangers. Rival gangs the Eagles and the Brats are stirring up their own trouble -- brought on by racial slurs and cultural differences -- prompting the Alleycats to choose sides.

Williams) wreaks havoc on young lives alongside her cohorts Edna (Pat Ast) and tough-as-nails warden Sutter (Sybil Danning). This is the nightmare that greets innocent Jenny (Linda Carol) upon her arrival. Facing voracious and cruel means of punishment from some bisexual students, security guards and instructors, Jenny does anything she can to escape.

Episode #165 RazorBucktown

Photobucket Photobucket

This week, for our top six list, we talk about our favorite top six underrated movies. Then we follow with the regular reviews and some confounding voicemails.

First up for review is the 1975 movie, "Bucktown." After traveling to a small Southern town for his murdered brother's funeral, Duke (Fred Williamson) and his not quite yet girlfriend, Aretha (Pam Grier), decide to reopen the dead man's nightclub. Problems arise, however, when the crooked local cops try to shake the pair down for money. Duke then calls in his crew of street toughs from the city to fend off the police, setting the stage for this blaxploitation thriller's violent conclusion. Check out the details here.

Next, we have another flick inspired by the success of Jaws; "Razorback." A wild, vicious pig terrorizes the Australian outback. The first victim is a small child who is killed. The child's granddad is brought to trial for killing him but aquitted. The next victim is an American TV-journalist. Her husband Carl travels to Australia and starts to search for the truth. The local inhabitants won't really help him, but he is joined by a hunter determined to find and kill the beast. You can pick up a region 2 dvd from our friends at Diabolik DVD.

Our first feature up for review is for the 1972 film, "Neither the Sea Nor the Sand," a.k.a. 'The Exorcism of Hugh." This movie takes place on the Isle of Jersey where a troubled wife has come to sort out the tumult of her life. She encounters a lighthouse-keeper there and they quickly become lovers. Together they flee to Scotland. One day they are making love on a beach when the lighthouse keeper dies. But that's only the beginning of the story. Check it out here.

Next, we have the Tommy Lee Jones "vehicle," "Black Moon Rising." Starring Linda "I just escaped from a time travelling killer robot" Hamilton and Robert Vaughn, this is the story of former burglar Quint, who is forced by FBI-agent Johnson to steal a tape with incriminating evidence from a suspicious company. Unfortunately he is caught in the act by guard Ringer, a ruthless ex-colleague. Running from the scene, Quint hides the tape in the "Black Moon", a prototype super car made by inventor Earl Windom. Shortly thereafter, this car is stolen by Nina, who works for top car thief Ryland. Chased by Ringer and Johnson, both thinking he still has the tape, Quint's only way out is to steal the car back. Episode #161 The Undertaker and his Sledgehammer

Photobucket Photobucket

In this episode we discuss the top six movies that we have watched and re-watched and re-watched. You might be surprised with some of the titles. Then again, you might not.

Our first flick up for review is the fun-time canibal flick "The Undertaker and His Pals." This movie is what would happen if the Archie gang from the comics tried to make a horror picture. An undertaker and his two friends, who are restaurant owners, drum up business by going out on the town and killing people. The restaurant owners use parts of the bodies for their menu, and the undertaker gets paid by the families to bury the remainder. Their racket goes awry when two detectives suspect that something isn't quite kosher. See what we are talking about here.

Next, we switch greas and review the first direct to video horror movie, "Sledgehammer." There is a very basic plot for this flick; years ago, there were some brutal murders in a house and now they have begun again. Check out some details here.

Episode #153 The Cheerleader's Spring Break

Photobucket Photobucket

This week, we give you a list that is the polar opposite of one from last month, “Nicest Characters.” Not nicest looking or nicest outfit, but honest to god nice. This list includes selfless, helpful, happy, cheerful people. Seriously.

Our first movie up for review is the 1973 sexpliotation comedy, “The Cheerleaders.” With nudity to rival any soft core porn, this is the story of Jeannie, (Stephanie Fondue) the new girl on the Amorosa High School cheerleading squad … and the last virgin in school. She really wants to give it up to the right guy, but all her good-hearted attempts go awry. High school was never like this! Kim Stanton and Jovita Bush fill out the squad, and Russ Meyer perennial Patrick Wright plays the coach.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0068364/

Next, we have the 1983 Sean S. Cunningham directed “Spring Break.” Racing to Fort Lauderdale, Fla., with their minds set on sun-drenched fun and scantily clad women, Stu (Paul Land) and O.T. (Steve Bassett) see their big plans hit a little snag when they're forced to shack up with college geeks Adam (Perry Lang) and Nelson (David Knell). Refusing to let the girl-repellent duo spoil their good time, Stu and O.T. decide to take their new roommates under their wings and show them what spring break is all about.

Episode #152 Getting Lucky at the Police Academy

Photobucket Photobucket

This week, we focus on comedies, even in our top six list. Top six favorite comedies are discussed this week, and then we get to reviews.

First up for review is the 1990 flick “Getting Lucky.” When a drunken leprechaun inside a beer bottle grants high school geek Bill (Steven Cooke) three wishes, (“Exeter flexeter…”) Bill thinks his girl troubles are over and asks the little guy to land him a date with beautiful cheerleader Krissi (Lezlie Z. McCraw). But when the alcoholic leprechaun can't keep his magic straight, Bill faces a whole new set of unexpected problems. Michael Paul Girard directs this teen comedy.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0099648/

Next, we have a classic from the 1980’s; “Police Academy.” In a less-than-brilliant flight of fancy, the mayor decides that the Police Academy will now be open to any and all applicants. Of course, that opens the floodgates to a swarm of weirdos and losers who have no business protecting or serving anything. Steve Guttenberg, Kim Cattrall, G.W. Bailey, Bubba Smith, Leslie Easterbrook, Michael Winslow, George Gaynes and many, many other people star in this zany comedy classic that spawned a rash of raucous sequels.

Episode #151: One Ghastly Nun Killer

Photobucket Photobucket

For our last week of December Nasties, we thought it would be a good idea to talk about our top six favorite Video Nasties. Now, we have limited the list to only ones that we have reviewed on the show, so it does leave some more popular titles out.

Our first review this week is 1968’s “The Ghastly Ones.” Sex and gore make one helluva feature from the addled mind of underground filmmaker, Andy Milligan. In Ghastly Ones, an eerie Victorian mansion is the setting where three couples must spend the night to inherit a fortune. But it's not long before the dismembering starts! In Seeds of Sin, a hopeless alcoholic terrorizes her hugely dysfunctional children -- one of whom happens to be a clergyman. This may be a case of the advertising campaign being much better than the actual film. One tag line reads: “Mad creatures of the night existing only for sensual sadistic moments of human slaughter!”
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0064369/

Next, we have “Killer Nun,” or “Suor Omicidi” A mentally disturbed nun develops some nasty habits in this cult horror tale. Suffering from a brain disorder, morphine-addicted Sister Gertrude (Anita Ekberg) spins out of control. She tries to get help, but none of her colleagues at the mental hospital take her seriously -- until someone starts murdering patients. Gertrude's erratic behavior makes her the prime suspect, so the Mother Superior has Gertrude committed … but the murders continue.

Episode #150 There Was a Little SS Madhouse...

Photobucket Photobucket

For week three of December Nasties, we have a top six list of our favorite “Most Despicable and Vile Characters.” Do you think you can guess any of them? Good luck!

First up for review is a little gem of Nazisploitation called: “SS Hell Camp,” or “The Beast in Heat.” Directed by Luigi Batzella and starring Macha Magall, this movie deals with the Nazi army and some of their stranger “medical” tests. After countless experiments with genetic mutation, a sadistic SS officer (Macha Magall) finally creates a sex-crazed man-beast that she can use to torture the terrified female prisoners at a Nazi POW camp during the throes of World War II. As she stuffs her evil creation with massive doses of mega-aphrodisiacs to keep it randy, she's all too aware that Allied forces could land at any minute and destroy everything she's worked for.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0076649/*

Next, we have “Madhouse,” a.k.a* “And When She Was Bad,” Flesh and the Beast,” “Scared to Death,” and “There Was a Little Girl.” This video nasty stars, Trish Everly, Michael MacRae, Dennis Robertson, Morgan Hart, Allison Biggers, Edith Ivey, Richard Baker, Don Devendorf, Jerry Fujikawa, Doug Dillingham, and was directed by, Ovidio G. Assonitis. Just before her birthday, good-girl teacher Julia (Trish Everly) dreams of a twin sister she never met. That dream turns into a real-life nightmare when her party is crashed by the deranged, deformed asylum fugitive Mary (Allison Biggers). As the women's uncle, Father James (Dennis Robertson), tries to keep peace between the sisters, the bodies of Julia's friends keep piling up anyway. But Mary may not be the murderer in this wild slasher flick.

Episode #149: The Yeti Versus the Werewolf Contamination

Photobucket Photobucket

In our second episode of December Nasties month, we re-visit an old topsix list- Top Six Most Disturbing.

Our first movie that we review is known by many names, “Night of the Howling Beast,” “La maldición de la bestia,” “Dans les griffes du loup-garou,” “Hall of the Mountain King,” “Horror of the Werewolf,” “Il licantropo e lo yeti,”  “The Curse of the Beast,”

“Varulven,” but our favorite is, “The Werewolf and the Yeti.” This is the story of, Waldemar, the renowned adventurer,  who joins an expedition to find the Yeti in the Himalayas. While hiking the mountains, he's captured by two cannibalistic demon nymphets guarding a remote Buddhist temple and becomes their sex-slave. They transform him into a werewolf and set him loose to roam the mountain where he encounters a sadistic bandit, or “Sherpa Pirate.”

Our second film for review is “Contamination.” A deserted ship arrives in New York City carrying a slaughtered crew and an even more horrific cargo: mutant green eggs the size of footballs that pulsate with life until they spray hideous death (exploding from human chests, no less). When a government research team begins an investigation, they uncover a grisly conspiracy involving murder, space monsters and … coffee!

Episode #148 Frozen Faces of Death Scream

Photobucket Photobucket

This week, to kick off December Nasties month, we talk about our favorite controversial movies. This makes for a fun top six list, as you can probably guess.

Our first movie up for review is Faces of Death. Also released under the title The Original Faces of Death, it is a mondo film which guides viewers through explicit scenes depicting a variety of ways to die and violent acts. It is often billed as Banned in 40 Countries. The film has been banned (at least temporarily) in Australia, Norway, Finland, New Zealand and the United Kingdom. Although several of the "human death" scenes are obvious fakes, some of the footage is genuine. Famous scenes of death from the media are included, such as stock footage of a napalm bombing in Vietnam, various newsreel footage, and wartime footage of Adolf Hitler. Also featured are the actual on-camera deaths of a variety of animals, including seals being clubbed to death and animals being killed on the slaughterhouse line.

Next up, we have the flick “Frozen Scream.” A mad scientist tries to create a drug for immortality. Before he manages to test it however he is kidnapped by his fellow scientists who are part of a cult who believe that the drug plus low temperatures will be able to create frozen zombies. The missing scientist's wife calls on her ex-boyfriend, a detective who is on the kidnapping case, to help her.

Episode #147: The Return of the Psycho Devil Cop’s Backbone

Photobucket Photobucket

This week, our top six list is all about movies that receive more than normal love and adoration. Movies that are held up on pedestals, cited as examples of greatness in filmmaking or that have huge cult followings. There’s a difference this time, these are movies that we just don’t see the reason for all the love. Now, this is not to say that we will hate every movie that we talk about, it’s just the opposite in most cases, actually. This list is, top six movies that we just don’t get the love for.

Our first movie up for review is 2001’s “El Espinazo del Diablo,” or “The Devil’s Backbone.” Directed by Guillermo Del Toro, this is the story of twelve-year-old Carlos (Fernando Tielve) who the latest arrival at Santa Lucia School, an imposing stone building that shelters orphans of the Republican militia and politicians during the last days of the Spanish Civil War. Carlos gradually uncovers the dark ties that bind the inhabitants of the school: hidden riches, sexual intrigue and the restless ghost of a murdered student, who may be the only one to provide resolution.

Next, we have the last entry in our listener appreciation month, 1993’s “Psycho Cop Returns” or “Psycho Cop 2.” This Adam Rifkin directed flick centers around a group of businessmen throwing a bachelor party. The only problem? Officer Joe Vickers, the Satan worshipping patrolman has overheard the guys bragging about the party in a local diner. Vickers shows up at the party to dispense his own form of justice.

Episode #146: The Dwarf Fortress

Photobucket Photobucket

This week, out top six list covers our favorite book adaptations. All genres are open, except graphic novels and comic books.

Our first movie up for review in our third week of listener appreciation month is the 1973 cult movie, “The Sinful Dwarf.” Peculiarly accented dwarf Olaf (Torben Bille) lures women back to a London boarding house belonging to his washed-up singer mother (Clara Keller), where the unsuspecting lasses are drugged, bound and generally transformed into heroin-addicted prostitutes. The bizarre and deliciously sleazy grindhouse thriller also stars the voluptuous and beautiful Anne Sparrow -- in her only film role -- as the naïve damsel in distress Mary.

Next, we have the 1986 movie, “Fortress.” Rachel Ward stars in this made-for-television drama chronicling the harrowing plight of a kidnapped teacher and the nine young children in her care. When Sally Jones (Ward) and her students are captured at their rural schoolhouse then forced to go to the Australian Outback, she tries to use her smarts to thwart the gunmen who are holding them hostage. Through her difficult ordeal, she learns the most important lesson of all: how to survive.

Episode #145: Tombs of the Spacehunter’s Forbiden Zone

Photobucket Photobucket

This week, Chris is back from Las Vegas and Bill had an incredibly busy week, which leads us to our top six list; top six reasons we don’t have a top six list. This is an extended glimpse into the private lives of the hosts. It should be fun!

Our first flick up for review is on that’s sure to make someone angry, “Spacehunter: Adventures in the Forbidden Zone.” In 2136, an intergalactic bounty hunter named Wolff (Peter Strauss) answers a distress signal that leads him to the plague-ridden planet of Terra Eleven, where he rescues three shipwrecked women from the evil clutches of a sinister cyborg dictator (Michael Ironside). After befriending a young orphaned girl (Molly Ringwald), Wolff sets off to battle mutants and space monsters in this action-packed galactic adventure. Originally shot for 1980’s era 3D, how will the “coming at you” filmmaking style hold up?

Next, we have another listener pick, 1971’s “Tombs of the Blind Dead.” In the 13th century, evil knights known as the Templars -- who sought eternal life by drinking human blood -- were executed and left exposed so that birds could peck out their eyes. But when a group of people in 1970s Portugal stumble on the knights' abandoned monastery, they unleash their rotting corpses to terrorize the land. This chilling film is the first installment of writer-director Amando de Ossorio's four-part horror masterpiece.

We start off listener appreciation month with two of the flicks that you voted for. But first, because we are not without a sense of humor, we discuss our top six least favorite movies that were recommended to us.

First up for review is “Six String Samurai.” After the Russians lob an atomic bomb at the United States in the late 1950s, survivors flock to the neon lights of "Lost Vegas," where Elvis Presley is a bona fide king of music and men, but when His Majesty dies unexpectedly, the city's shiny throne is up for grabs. Armed with a six-string in one hand and a samurai sword in the other, rock 'n' roll hipster Buddy (Jeffrey Falcon) vows to make it to Sin City in time for his coronation.

Next we have the 1981 spoof, “Student Bodies.” Director Mickey Rose's zany send-up of teen slasher flicks features a maniacal psycho known as the Breather (played by Richard Belzer), who stalks -- and murders -- promiscuous students at a suburban high school. The fanatical killer's unusual weapons include paper clips, blackboard erasers and eggplants. Kristen Riter, Matthew Goldsby, Joe Flood, Kevin Mannis and Sara Eckhardt head the cast.

Episode #143: Touch of Vampire Doll Death

Photobucket Photobucket

Our top six list for this week is our favorite top six overlooked horror films.

We have for our first review this week is Lucio Fulci’s 1970 film, Touch of Death. Lester Parsons (Brett Halsey) is a destitute man who, despite being bad at gambling, is addicted to it. Unfortunately, in feeding his avaricious vice, he's racked up debts. To pay off what he owes, he harnesses his second "talent" as a cannibal who preys on rich, unmarried women, feasting on them once he's bilked them of their money. Someone's onto his modus operandi, though, and he's being blackmailed for all his misdeeds.

Next, we have Vampire Doll, a 1970 Toho vampire flick. Also known as Fear of the Ghost House: Bloodsucking Doll. This is the story of a girl who is taken away from her mortal life to live in the mansion of “The Mother.” But, like all good movie girls, she has someone that cares for her and comes looking. This is part of the series that includes Lake of Dracula (1971) and Evil of Dracula (1974).

Episode #142: Vanishing Opera

Photobucket

Photobucket

In this episode of Outside the Cinema, we discuss our favorite six movies that are actually scary.

Our first review is the 1978 Argento classic, "Opera." Things really get moving when the leading diva of Verdi's "Macbeth" is run over by a car, her understudy, Betty (Cristina Marsillach), takes over the role. Things go from bad to worse when a madman begins to kill other members of the cast -- and forces Betty to watch. As the police struggle to find the murderer, Betty begins to realize her death will be the final act if they can't locate the killer in time.

Next, we have the original version of "The Vanishing," called "Spoorloos" or "L'homme qui voulait savoir." In this film, a young man obsessively searches for his girlfriend for three years after she disappears into thin air at a rest stop while on vacation. His investigation catches the eye of her calculating abductor, an apparently unassuming professor and family man. Using flashbacks, we see how the kidnapper carefully plans the woman's abduction and contacts the boyfriend, promising to reveal to him the woman's fate. George Sluizer directs this Dutch thriller.

On this week’s show, Bill announces the 6 movies for this years Halloween Throwdown, on October 30th starting at noon. And Chris lists his top six movies that he would show at a Halloween party.

Our first movie up for review this week is, “Dark Forces.” Nick and Sandra Rast (David Hemmings and Carmen Duncan) will do anything to help their seriously ill son in this fantasy thriller. So, when faith healer Gregory Wolfe (Robert Powell) arrives and starts treating the boy with his impressive powers, Sandra fully embraces him and his techniques. But complications soon arise: Nick's Senate career may be in jeopardy because his powerful mentor, Doc Wheelan (Broderick Crawford), can't abide Wolfe.

Next, we have the 1974 film, “Vampyres.” In this controversial cult classic (also known as Daughters of Dracula), two beautiful bisexual women -- played by Marianne Morris and Anulka -- roam the English countryside, luring unsuspecting men to their estate for orgies of sex and blood. When an innocent young couple stumbles into the vampyres' dangerous lair, they're sucked into a vortex of savage lust and forbidden desires. Jose Ramon Larraz directs this landmark of erotic cinema.

Episode #140: Criminally Insane Vice Academy

Photobucket Photobucket

This week, our top six list is "Top Six Favorite Death Scenes." This moves away from just horror movie kills and into many other genres that have really good visuals.

Our first film up for review this week is the 1975 low budget slasher, "Criminally Insane." This is the story of a woman who has just been released from an insane asylum. Upon her return home, she is told that she must start to lose weight, for health reasons. This does not sit well with her, and woe be to anyone that gets in her way! Check it out on IMdB here.

Next we have the comedy, "Vice Academy." A "Police Academy" style flick, it stars perennial favorite, Linnea Quigley and porn superstar Ginger Lynn Allen. With a loose plot based around graduation and the number of arrests each cadet has, Linnea sets out to bust a porn operation followed by a prostitution ring. Surprisingly, the real life porn star stays fully clothed the entire time! Read the IMdB listing.

Episode #139: The Thunderbird House with 2015 Laughing Windows

PhotobucketPhotobucket

This week we start with our top six list for this week “Top Six Most Interesting Directors Working Today.” But, before that, we go over our picks for the poll we put up for Listener Suggested Month. (November.)

Our first flick up for review was featured in “The 50 Worst Movies Ever Made,” 1981’s disaster of a post-apocalyptic carsploitation “Firebird 2015 a.d.” Starring most notably, Darren McGavin and some other people, this is the story of a “burner” and his flaunting the law to drive his sweet Firebird. There’s a sub-plot involving the government and some law, but that’s all explained in song. Seriously.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0082381/

Our second movie up for review is the 1976 giallo, “La casadalle finestre che ridono,” a.k.a. “The House With Laughing Windows.” Directed by Pupi Avati, this is a different kind of giallo, not relying on the normal conventions of the genre. After a young fresco restoration expert travels to a remote quiet village to work on an image of St. Sebastiano. Almost right away weird things start happening, building to a violent climax.

Episode #138: Dark American Tower Commandos

Photobucket Photobucket

This week, we have a top six list inspired by our friends in the U.K. We talk about our top six films from the United Kingdom.

Our first film up for review is part of the American action film craze of the 1980’s, “American Commando.” Starring Christopher Mitchum, John Philip Law and Willie Williams, this is really two stories in one. We have a standard revenge flick followed by a “Delta Force” take it to the enemy story.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0088705/

Next, we have a poltergeist story set in a skyscraper, 1987’s “Dark Tower.” Starring Michael Moraity, Jenny Agutter, Carol Linney, Theodore Bikel and a surprise appearance from Kevin McCarthy, this should by all rights be a really good ghost story. Is it?

This week, we have a listener suggested Top Six List; Top six movies you have to finish when it comes on T.V. Thanks to Jake McLargeHuge for the suggestion on our forums over at http://palavr.com.

Our first movie up for review is 1975’s Biker/Comedy/Musical/Blaxploitation flick, “Darktown Strutters.” This is the story of a gang of biker chicks and their run ins with the law, the Klan and a southern maniac. Made like a live action mix between Benny Hill, Ralph Bakshii, The Keystone Kops and Scooby Do, this is one tough movie to describe. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0072844/

Next, we have the 1990 Horror/Comedy/Musical “Rockula.” Dean Cameron (Chainsaw from Summer School) is Ralph, a vampire that is living under a curse. His one true love is killed on her 22 birthday by a pirate with a rhinestone peg leg and a hambone. Then she is re-incarnated and it starts all over again. Toni Basil, (“Oh Mickey you’re so fine, you’re so fine you blow my mind. Hey Mickey!” plays Ralph’s mom, while Tawny Fere is Mona and Thomas “She blinded me with science” Dolby plays the villain Stanley. It’s cheesey, campy and silly. But, is it fun?

Listen: Episode #137: Darktown Rockula Strutters

Photobucket

Photobucket

In this week’s episode, we discuss out top six groundbreaking / game changing films. What exactly constitutes a game changer? We go over our criteria before we delve into our lists.

Our first review this week is the Umberto Lenzi Giallo, “Gatti rossi un labirinto di vetro,” a.k.a. “Eyeball.” This is the story of a group of tourists in Spain. One by one the tourisits are being stalked and killed by a red clad maniac. The modus operandi for the killer is to remove the victim’s left eye. Check the IMdB page here.

The second movie for review is hands down the most most requested review in the history of Outside the Cinema; 1977’s Hausu. Directed by Nobuhiko Obayashi, this starts out as a typical teen comedy drama. Once they girls get to the titular “house,” all bets are off. Words alone can not do justice to the visuals in this film, but we try nonetheless. Find out who was responsible for this here.

In this episode, we delve into the realm of bad Sci-Fi with predictable consequences. Fortunately there is an Edwige Fenech movie in reserve to get everything back on track. But first, we go over our top six list for the week: Top Six Getaways Gone Bad!

One of the movies up for review this week is the Aussie sci-fi flick "The Time Guardian." (barely) starring Carrie Fisher and Harry Dean Stanton. This is the story of the survivors of a time traveling city and their constant war with a cyborg army. Taking story ideas from "Krull", "Blade Runner" and most notably (and most obviously) "The Terminator," "The Time Guardian is exactly as awesome as it sounds. Check out the IMdB page here!

Next, we have another entry in Edwige Fenech's catalog of films. "Secrets of a Callgirl" is a different kind of film for Ms. Fenech, wherein, this is a drama with a crime influence. The movie chronicles the story of a girl who makes one bad choice and then her lif spirals out of control from there. Edwige gets more of a chance to exercise her acting chops in this movie and it is a welcome change. See what IMdB has to say about it here!

Episode #134: Welcome the Cannibal Girls of Arrow Beach

Photobucket Photobucket

In this week's show, we cover two movies and discuss a top six list. Nothing too different, in fact, not different at all. Well, the only difference is the topic of the list. This week, we have "Top Six Movies With Numbers in the Title (not sequels.)"

Photobucket

Our first flick on the review chopping block is the 1974 Meg Foster vehicle, "Arrow Beach." This is the story of a hippie girl (Foster) who runs afoul of a Korean War vet, Jason Henry (Lawrence Harvey) and his deep dark secret. What is that secret you ask? He's a cannibal. Not really a surprise given all the heavy handed editing used in the first third of the movie. With the help of a nurse, Foster tries to clear her name and prove what Jason Henry has done. Click here for the IMdB page.

Photobucket
Eugene Levy as you know him today.

Next up, we have the cult classic “Cannibal Girls.” Written and directed by Ivan Reitman and starring Eugene Levy as “Clifford Sturgis,” and Andrea Martin as “Gloria Wellaby,” this is the story of a couple that runs afoul of, you guessed it, cannibal girls! The house they live in is a local legend and even after watching, we aren’t entirely sure what happened or why. Was that a good thing? Listen and find out! Click here for the IMdB page

Episode # 133: One Down, Fatal Games to Go

Photobucket Photobucket

On this week's episode, we talk about our top six favorite assylum / hospital movies. Leaving out the titles we discussed on recent shows, we manage to put together a pretty good list of combined choices.

The first movie up for review this week is the sequel in spirit, "One down, Two to Go." Starring Jim Kelly, Jim Brown, Richard Roundtree and Fred Williamson, this is the story of a group of people that end up getting swindled by the Mob after they "fix" a martial arts tournament. released in 1982, it is possible that this flick just missed out on the blaxpolitation craze.

Photobucket

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0086051/

The next movie we review is another take on the slasher genre. This time, the killer in "Fatal Games" is killing hopeful Olympic atheletes with a javelin. There is copious nudity and many sub-plots mentioned and then promptly abandoned. This film does ask one gripping question though, but you'll have to listen to find out what that is.

Episode #132 High Heavy Crime Metal Massacre

Photobucket Photobucket

Our top six list this week is something that promises some really random titles. Top Six movies we haven’t talked about on the show. This can (and does) include anything. How weird does it get? Take a listen and find out!

Our first tile this week is the Dave DeFalco uber project, “Heavy Metal Massacre.” This is the story of some scrawny jerk that has a fake leather fetish. What does he do for kicks? Slowly kills people with obviously fake tools. I would link to the IMdB page like I usually do, but it isn’t even listed there.

Next up, we have the Enzo Castellari film, High Crime, a.k.a. La polizia incrimina la legge assolve. Starring the wonderful Franco Nero, this is the story of a police inspector and his war with a very powerful European drug ring. Vice-Comissioner Belli (Nero) may have gotten himself in over his head this time.
